West Midlands AMA Support Group

Who are we?

The West Midlands AMA Support Group is a forum which exists to help museum, gallery and other heritage professionals who are working towards the AMA in the region.

We aim to

Meet four times a year at a variety of museums and heritage sites to look at best practice, new initiatives and different ways of working

Provide learning experiences in the form of talks and tours

Provide a communication and discussion forum both inside and outside meetings, to discuss topical and ethical issues and allow for mutual support

Motivate members to carry through the AMA process

Discuss AMA paperwork in an environment of support and guidance

Network and meet others in the area at various stages of the AMA process (including inviting those who have completed it to talk about their experiences)

Give the opportunity for members to host events at their organisation

Who is the group for?

The group welcomes everyone, from those who are thinking about starting, to those who have made more progress on the AMA

Members are welcome from across the West Midlands, working in a wide variety of organisations and areas of interest.

The AMA Support Groups are an excellent went of extending your knowledge of the different functions and roles of a museum. It enables you at second hand to meet and interview people that may have a remit for particular areas of the Knowledge Journal; as well as more broadly. So why not drop Hannah a line and see when the next meeting is.

The next meeting for the West Mids support group will be on the 12th November at 2pm, at the Arts Council building (room 2), 82 Granville Street, Birmingham.

This will be a bit of a meet and greet session, to discuss what we're hoping to gain from our AMAs and Gemma Dhami, the MA representative for the West Mids will also be there.

If you can make it, please let me know via amawestmids@gmail.com.

The next meeting of the AMA West Mids Support Group will be at 2pm on Friday November 9th, at The Commandery, Worcester, WR1 2HU This will be Gum and my last session as co-ordinators, but the group is continuing, so do come along! We will be discussing the Review, so it will be a great chance to find out about how it all works, but please do let us know if there is anything else that you would like to discuss. We've also found that it's been helpful to have a general round table discussion on what people are working on, so there will be lots of opportunities for this too. Please do email Rosie.Barker@birmingham.gov.uk if you would like to attend - all welcome, whether you've just started, almost finished or are just interested in finding out about the AMA.

Count me in for the November meeting. Is there anything else I need to do? (I've tried e-mailing but I'm not sure my address is getting through)

The next meeting of the West Midlands AMA Support Group will be on Thursday 24th November at 10.30am in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery's AV Room.

For anyone wondering if they can justify coming, Birmingham's German Market will be open and is just outside the Musuem so you can always walk slowly back through Birmingham and have a look on your way (I recommend the candied cashews)!

Please do let us know if you can come by emailing amawestmids@gmail.com or contacting myself or Gum direct at Aston Hall on 0121 675 4722. Hope to see you there!

The next AMA West Midlands Support Group meeting
will be at the National Trust property Coughton Court, nr Alcester, Warwickshire

starting at 10am and finishing in the afternoon (time to be confirmed)

As funding and budgets are cut, we may need to employ more volunteers in our museums and heritage sites.
As the National Trust's volunteer workforce is extensive and well established, we will meet at Coughton Court to learn more about the considerations and processes of volunteer development and management.

Rebecca White, Regional Volunteering Officer for National Trust West Midlands,
Claire Blackburn, Property Administrator and Volunteer Champion for Coughton Court,
and Pat Ellis, Volunteer at Coughton Court.
As the property will be closed to the public on this day, we will also be given a privileged tour around the house

It would be great to see you there! Please RSVP by Thursday 23rd September to Laura Keating
