With many of you preparing for your professional review, we will cover Ethics and Topical issues. It would be good if you could think of some issues that you may use in your review, so we could discuss them. Please let me know if you're intending to come, and thanks to those who already have.
Ethics and topical issues day.
To help discussions we'll be joined by Elizabeth Walker and Bruce Campbell. Elizabeth is Collections Manager at the National Museums of Wales, and an AMA mentor. Bruce was until a couple of years ago Collections Officer and Natural History Curator for Newport Museums service, and an AMA mentor. Please come ready with ideas, and ready to
pitch in on discussions. If there is something you have a burning desire to discuss, drop me a line and we'll have a thing about it before the day. Aside from what should be an interesting day, we hope that you will use it to help prepare you for your professional review. Might be a good idea to have a read through the Code of Ethics beforehand, so we can link topics back to those principles.
10am - cup of tea, start and brief catch up
10.30 - 12.30. Ethical discussions to include:
1) Ethical care of human remains (Elizabeth Walker leading).
2) Disposal including: - the ethics of (Elizabeth Walker).
- selling collections in current climate (Emily Price).
- disposal decisions being made without input of specialist knowledge, due to cuts in staffing. (Bruce Campbell).
3) Samples being taken from specimens (Elizabeth Walker).
4) Your ideas for the Ethical part of you professional review, which we can all discuss.
12.30 - 2pm Lunch. Frankie & Bennies and Nandos nearby.
2 - 4pm Topical issues to include:
1) The pressure to hold more events (filming, corporate hire, weddings, dinners etc etc), balanced with care of collections (Emily Price to lead).
2) Increasing pressure to sell staff skills? Looking at charging for conservation work, talks, public enquiries.
3) Your ideas for the Ethical part of you professional review, which we can all discuss.
4 - 4.30 Tour of the Nantgarw site. We have to be off site by 4.30.

just to let you know that the next AMA support group will be on 15 May, 10.15am - 3.30pm, at Torquay Museum.
The topic will be AMA paperwork, and we will be looking at examples from recent successful candidates.
Agenda:
10:15 - 10:45 - Arrival and coffee
10:45 - 11:15 - Introductions / news / announcements
11:15 - 13:00 - Looking at AMA paperwork, with examples from recent AMAs.
13:00 - 14:15 - Lunch (not provided) at nearby cafe or pub
14:30 - 15:30 - Tour of Torquay Museum stores with curator, Barry Chandler.
Do let me know if you'll be able to attend
Directions below:
If traveling by car it is best to pay to park in the Terrace Carpark (marked on the map) if you park on the top level and walk to the far end of the carpark you can exit on to Museum Road and the musseum is just at the bottom of the hill.. Sorry about the poor definition on the map. There is some free on street parking on Braddons Hill Road East but there are rarely any
spaces. Most of the roads in the vacinity have 2 hour limited stay and the traffic wardens are very active.
Coming in to Torquay there are signs for the museum but these a relatively infrequent. If you follow signs for Kents Cavern until you get on to a main
road called Babbacombe Road this is quite a long road, you will go past a gardening center on the right. The museum is situated on this road on the righ hand side if you are coming down the hill. The carpark is to the right at the traffic lights that are past the museum.
Alternatively you can come via the seafront (which is signed), follow the sea towards the town at the first round about take the first exit, at the second roundabout (with the clock tower) take the first exit again we are a couple of minutes up the road on the left and the carpark is left at the traffic lights.
By train Torquay Station is just over a miles walk away, along the sea front. When you come out of the station turn left and follow the sea until you get to the harbour, walk around the harbour. On the Strand you will see
a row of shops including Debenhams, there is an island with a clock tower on it. You need to walk up Torwood Street which is the road leading away from
the sea for about 5 minutes and the Museum is on the Left opposite a park. If you don't want to walk you can get a No 12 bus along the seafront. It will drop you at the harbour and you can walk up the hill or get a No 32
from outside debenhams which will drop you in front of the museum.
