Associateship of the Museums Association
The AMA is the longest running professional development programme in the sector, widely acclaimed by the workforce and employers.
The AMA is beneficial at any stage of your career it provides a framework for your professional development, working at your pace towards your ambitions.
You are supported all the way with clear competencies, access to a mentor, participation in support groups and much more.
The AMA provides a flexible way to become an up-to-date and well-rounded museum professional, while you work.
It takes two to three years to complete (on average). At the end of this time you will be assessed by trained sector colleagues who will review your AMA to a recognised standard.
The AMA is open to paid employees, volunteers, freelancers and consultants with at least 12 months' experience, either full-time or part-time.
You need to have a emerging understanding of the sector and some deeper experience on which to build. To ensure this we ask you to reflect on your experience to date by looking at the AMA competencies and completing the self review.

Assistance for annual fees is only available for those funding their AMA themselves.
If you are finding it difficult to pay the fees required for the AMA there are limited funds available to assist with these payments.
Those seeking financial assistance are encouraged to apply to the Museums Association Benevolent Fund (including the Trevor Walden Trust).
There are three formal application rounds – end of May, end of September and end of January.
