Give your career a boost at networking and professional development event
The Museums Association (MA) is has a limited number of places left on its professional development and networking event Moving on Up: Building a Dynamic Museum Career.

Taking place on 26 February at Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd (National Museum Cardiff), Moving on Up is aimed at people in the first five years of their career who want to get practical advice on standing out from the crowd, developing their networks and having a positive impact in the sector.

The event, chaired by Nat Edwards, the head of masterplan North at the Science Museum, is designed to maximise networking opportunities, with activities planned throughout the day.

Author and Guardian columnist Nikesh Shukla will give a keynote at Moving on Up 2018, discussing his career and experiences campaigning for better diversity in the publishing sector.
The morning also features a workshop delivered by Oonagh Murphy, an arts management consultant, on taking a skills-led approach to your career, and a Q&A panel on survival tactics with senior museum professionals.

During the afternoon, delegates will learn how to celebrate their mistakes with Katherine McAlpine, the creator of Museum Oops, and how to create career-building opportunities
with Ed Lawless, the education manager of the British Museum’s Samsung Digital Learning Programme and a founding member of the Emerging Museum Professionals networks.

There will also be opportunities to receive one-on-one advice from senior museum professionals during an extended speed mentoring session, and breakout workshops on CVs and interviews, influencing, employment law and making a business case.

Three Moving on Up alumni - Simon Brown, the curator of collections at Newstead Abbey, part of Nottingham City Museums and Galleries, and MA board member; Shaz Hussain, an assistant curator at the Science Museum; and Charlotte Morgan, the museum manager at Cynon Valley Museum Trust and MA rep for Wales – will end the day with a discussion on how delegates can apply advice from the event to their careers.

There will also be a drinks event at the museum after the conference for delegates to continue networking and discuss the day.
