Recommended by our reps

This month, our Yorkshire Rep, Jude Holland recommends two museums which were once home to LGBT pioneers:

“Feeling bereft now Gentleman Jack is off our screens? Why not visit Shibden Hall (pictured above), near Halifax, part of Calderdale Museums and the former home of the series’ heroine, eighteenth century diarist Anne Lister. Much of the series was filmed in the fifteenth century Hall. You can find out more about Anne and her diary, while exploring the quirky building and see an impressive and extensive collection of folk life material housed in its outbuildings.

“The Maurice Dobson Museum in Darfield, near Barnsley, used to be the village shop, owned and run for much of the second part of the 20th century by openly gay ex-miner, ex-soldier and local boxing champion, Maurice.  Maurice was a collector of ceramics, amongst other things, and this fascinating community museum, houses his collection, as well as telling the history of Darfield.”
