Museums Association Benevolent Fund

To alleviate financial distress of members of the MA and provide education and training
The Museums Association Benevolent Fund (which was merged with the Trevor Walden Trust in 2015) exists to support MA members facing financial hardship and to provide financial support for professional development.

Funding

The Benevolent Fund provides two types of grant:

Hardship

•    For the relief of poverty
•    To alleviate financial distress suffered by past or present members of the Museums Association and their immediate dependents

Applications for alleviating financial distress will be considered for family-related matters such as: childcare while a member or dependent redevelops their skills; respite care for a member or dependent; specialist equipment for disabled living; or difficulties caused by sudden bereavement.

Professional development

•    To support the education, training and development of members participating in programmes and events organised by the MA, including working towards the AMA, Transformers and the FMA
•    To support the education, training and development of members participating in programmes and events organised by other external providers – funding of this nature is only available to current core programme participants and/ or programme alumni.

Applicants must be an individual member of the Museums Association and preference is given to those self-funding and paying their own expenses.

Applications for professional development funding will be considered within particular funding rounds – with decisions made at the end of January, May and September (respectively) each year.

Inclusive places

The Benevolent Fund also supports 100 free places at Museums Association (MA) events throughout the year to individual members facing barriers in the workplace due to:

•    Ethnicity
•    Disability
•    Socio-economic background
•    Gender identity or sexual orientation (LGBTQ) 

There are 10 free inclusive places available for each MA one-day conference, as well as Don’t Stop Me Now and Moving on Up.

There are 20 free places available for the MA Conference and Exhibition.

In addition to providing support to alleviate financial hardship and distress, the Museum Association's Benevolent Fund provides important CPD support for members in the form of Trevor Walden Bursaries. I would encourage any member reviewing their professional development to consider the Benevolent Fund as a possible means of enabling a particular development activity. The fund may be able to remove a financial obstacle to career development.
