Fireman's axe

Goole Museum & Art Gallery collection

M10733 - Steel axe, curved head, blade at one end, pick at the other, with wooden shaft. Head marked 'Elwell 5122' on blade, and engraved '1138' on top of steel shaft on each side. Leather protective cover, fastening with press stud, with two leather loops and metal spring clip to attach to belt etc. Leather stamped '1129' - fireman's number. Axe issued to John West when he joined Lindsey Fire Service (later Humberside Fire Service) in 1953; the number on the shaft suggests that the axe was issued at an earlier date to another fireman. Mr. West served at stations across the western side of Humberside in various capacities.
