When it was being developed in 2011, the MA said that the strategy in Scotland needed to:

• focus on improving museums’ public impact

• address long-term funding

• be ambitious

There have been several attempts to produce a national museum strategy for England, but these have been unsuccessful.

In England, the DCMS is responsible for policy towards national museums and ACE oversees the government’s interest in non-national museums.

Neither organisation currently appears to have an appetite for setting a national strategy.

Arts Council England (ACE) has set out its view about an ‘excellent’ museum and its priorities for museums for the next few years.

ACE is working on a guiding vision for museums but long term will need to play a leading role, with DCMS, in developing a national strategy for England's museums.

The Heritage Lottery Fund

The Heritage Lottery Fund is a major funder of museums UK-wide and we hope its new strategy will continue to stress the centrality of participation and learning.
